Information about D.M. research
(supplied by Dr Brian Catchpole)
I am a veterinary immunology lecturer, paid by the Royal Veterinary
College. My collaborator on this project is Dr Nick Jeffery, a veterinary
neurologist who is paid by Cambridge Veterinary School. I have, personally,
raised £3,800 from the RCVS Trust to carry out research into the
cause of DM in GSDs
I am happy to receive urine samples from anyone, provided they come
with a form. Urine samples must be wrapped in bubble-wrap and in a Jiffi
bag labelled "Veterinary Pathological Specimen".
Updates:
From the urine samples analysed so far, 3 dogs have very high levels of
nitric oxide in the urine. Nitric oxide is a chemical produced by the immune
system which has been shown to cause nerve damage in patients with multiple
sclerosis. I am currently organising a test for blood samples which we
hope will be more sensitive than urine.
