Dog training clubs in the UK
Choosing a club
How you choose a club is likely to depend on
what methods you want to use to train your dog. So always visit a club
first and watch the classes in progress and chat to other dog owners. Look
for dogs and handlers that are enjoying themselves. Be sure you feel you
would want to use the methods they teach and if you have any queries, then
talk to the instructors. Different clubs may train for different purposes-domestic
(pet) obedience, obedience competition, training for the breed show ring
or agility for example. Many clubs will teach a number of these different
disciplines as many dog trainers participate in more than one canine activity
with their dogs. Check that the club you contact will teach the training
you are interested in. There are organisations which award some sort of
accreditation.
Finding a dog training club
-
The Kennel Club
-
Dog training clubs can register with the Kennel Club
if they adhere to certain regulations about their funding and organization.
There is a mechanism for taking action against a club or individual (who
may be a member of a club) that acts in a way that is "prejudicial to the
interests of the canine world", but the Kennel Club does not award any
form of accreditation for training standards. Any club which wishes to
run shows or matches must be registered with the Kennel Club. A list of
these clubs is available from the Kennel Club and is published in their
Year Book.

Local information
-
Most clubs advertise in their local vets, libraries
and sometimes newspapers or Yellow Pages. Your local dog warden is also
likely to help as he or she normally maintains contact with local clubs.

Organizations
Many of the accrediting organizations maintain
lists of their members, some of whom are likely to teach at dog training
clubs.
