Microchip adverse reaction reporting scheme

There have been sporadic anecdotal reports of microchips that could not be read correctly or that have caused problems. Traditionally, these "adverse reactions" have been reported to the companies concerned. However, the BSAVA feels that this information should be coordinated by an independent body, rather as the Veterinary Medicines Directorate does with pharmaceuticals. In August 1997, the BSAVA therefore launched a Microchip Adverse Reaction Reporting Scheme, with an article in JSAP (vol 38, p 369) and distribution of the reporting form to all its members. The purpose of this scheme is to record independently all adverse reactions associated with microchips including migration and loss from the animal. In addition, the form lays out the protocol that should he followed if a problem is encountered. We hope all veterinary surgeons will make use of this scheme so that the results can be collated by one central authority and published on a regular basis. Copies can be obtained from the Cheltenham office.
The problems reported could include:

Confirmation of the last three may involve radiography. Before this is performed, the relevant manufacturer should be contacted for financial support.
The BSAVA strongly supports the principle of pet identification by microchip and believes that this database will help to confirm the reliability of the system.
