"Scent to Save lives Campaign"

This project highlights the work of mine detection dogs and how man-dog teams work together to "sniff out" land mines and save lives.

Why? ............Simply put, German Shepherd Dogs are critical to saving lives and easing the scourge of land mines. Though no one solution exists for the global land mine epidemic, mine detection dog teams are today the most efficient and effective tool for detecting land mines in a majority of affected countries.

GSD's have the incredible ability to detect land mines by "sniffing out" the explosives in the mines. The dogs are trained to locate the scent, sit still, stay safe, and alert a human partner to mark the spot so the mine can be removed or destroyed. This detection skill, as well as the dog’s agility and size, makes the dog one of the most versatile and valuable partners in the land mine removal team.

Every 30 minutes, of every day, someone finds a land mine or unexploded weapon by accident and either loses their life, or suffers horrific injuries.  Over 90% are innocent civilians. One third are children.  On average it takes 12 hours for the casualty to receive any treatment.
Land mines also severely impede and disrupt development in poor countries struggling to recover from conflict. In this way land mines indirectly affect millions of people.

Unfortunately, these hidden killers stay active long after the conflict in affected areas are over. They affect the innocent with terrifying regularity. Traditional demining techniques utilizing metal detectors and probes have only scratched the surface of the problem. The good news is that the integration of dogs with machines and manual techniques accelerates the pace of mine clearance operations.

Approximately 700 mine detection dogs now "sniff out" land mines in 23 countries around the world. Yet, with over 60 mine affected countries, more than two new land mine victims every hour, and millions of acres of contaminated land, there is much work to be done, and a great need for more highly trained dog teams!
