The German Shepherd Dog League of Great Britain formulated in 1980

A Recommended Code of Ethics.

In keeping with my dedication of our breed, I will endeavour to maintain the following minimum practices:-

To maintain the best possible standards of health and environment for my dogs not keeping more than I can properly care for and maintain.

To refuse to sell to unethical dealers or any buyers where I have reason to believe the dog will not be properly cared for.

To keep and pass on to buyers of stock, accurate records of health, pedigree and registrations and advise on rearing.

To offer facilities to the purchaser for the puppy to be examined by a qualified veterinary surgeon, if requested on the breeders premises.

To sell only puppies and adults of sound health and temperament.

To replace any puppy which develops a physical defect to such a degree that on the advice of 2 qualified veterinary surgeons the puppy has to be put down.

In the case of an adult dog, not knowingly to sell an epileptic dog and agree to X Ray the hips if desired by the buyer.

The onus is on the buyer to request this and to pay the expenses OR to buy as seen

To refuse a stud service to any bitch I know to be epileptic or suffering from any defect which in my opinion renders it unsuitable or unlikely to breed good normal puppies. Nor shall I use a stud dog I consider to have these failings.

To allow a repeat service when a bitch failed to conceive provided the stud dog is in good health and available. If this is not possible, to allow the concession with another dog owned by myself, who's fee is less or similar.

Not to breed puppies just for sale and become a puppy factory but to breed only for the specific purpose of improvement of the breed and selling those surplus to requirements.
