Acupuncture is a highly sophisticated and effective form of treatment. In China, it has been a major part of human primary health care for the last 5,000 years. Acupuncture literally means 'needle piercing' and is the practice of inserting very fine needles into the skin to stimulate specific points called acupoints. Other 'tools' are sometimes used inplace of, or in addition to, needles - lasers, ultrasonic waves and light waves , for example. There are many theories as to how acupuncture works. Scientists can in part explain the immediate pain-relieving effects of acupuncture since endorphins (the body's own natural pain relievers) are released as a result of acupuncture . However, they are unable to explain how chronic health problems or non pain-related conditions are affected and eased by this therapy. The remarkable success of acupuncture in treating animals appears to disprove that it works simply because you believe in it. It is of benefit in all types of aches and pains including arthritis, stress, depression, fatigue, circulation and digestive problems. As with any other form of medicine it cannot reverse any muscle wasting or bone deformalities that have already occured in the body. Acupuncture is often used in conjunction with other forms of treatment.
