Update on Jake.

02/08/03.

This is Jake 3 days after Christine Gengler apparently abandoned Jake and gave him away to a couple who were unable to care for him. The couple were expecting a baby, lived in a house with no garden, and were (by their own admission) unable to afford to feed the dog. They had taken him to the vets to have him put to sleep.
"This is not the condition of a dog who has been well looked after" reports a shelter worker. "Jake is dirty, his coat is a mess from long term lack of grooming, he looks unhappy, is in pain, and the smell from him is nauseating."
In the past 2 months Jakes medical treatment has only been given on an adhoc basis and his personal hygiene, which was of the utmost importance in his case, has been neglected.
Jakes plight came to the attention of GSD Helpline quite by chance via 'Vigil GSD Rescue' who had been alerted as to Jakes plight by the attending vet. 'Vigil Rescue' were full and unable to take Jake, but they were desperate that he should be given a chance.
We have arranged for him to be taken into a rescue kennel while his condition is evaluated.
We are hoping that it will be possible for Jakes condition to be treated surgically.
Some of the funds raised as a result of the Our Dog article remain available to help Jake. These are being transferred to the vet now dealing with his case. Any short fall will be met from The Rocky Trust Fund.

Update on Jake.

The veterinary surgeon treating Jake has advised that, whilst surgery would have been the best treatment for Jake, unfortunately his condition has been neglected for such a long period of time, that will now no longer be a feasible option.
Jake has started a new course of medical treatment in the hope that this will relieve some of the symptoms and improve his quality of life.
The severe pain Jake was suffering when he arrived in rescue kennels, has been controlled and he is much happier in himself.
It will be some time yet, before we know how successful or otherwise this treatment has been, but in the meanwhile, a palliative care home has been generously been offered to the dog.

Sadly for Jake, everyones best efforts were not enough and his condition failed to show any notable improvement. Upon veterinary advice, Jake was put to sleep 19th August 2003.
The generous donations that we received to help fund Jakes care have been added to the Rocky Trust Fund in order that they may help other such unfortunate dogs. Our sincere thanks go to all who contacted us, contributed financially, and offered help in many other ways. But most of all our thanks must go to Helen and Bobbi Gibson, the rescue workers from GSD Rescue & Rehoming North East, and Prince Bishop Vet Practice who took care of Jake during the last few days of his life.
